U.S. Military Titles, Salutations, and Address Lines--Enlisted Personnel

The following table of military titles will be best looking, and most easily read, if it is displayed just a little wider than the one-line sentence below it. (You can use your mouse pointer to pull or push on the sides of the Help window and/or its internal divider. And/or you can choose Options, Font, Small at the very top of your Help window and go back to Options, Font, Normal later.)

ALL official Salutations include Last Name: Dear Sergeant Major Smith:, Dear Seaman Smith:, etc.

It should be relatively easy to match the Title abbreviations above to the ranks spelled out here in the same order, divided by semicolons where the Salutation changes--

Army
Sergeant Major of the Army, Command Sergeant Major, Sergeant Major; First Sergeant;
Master Sergeant, Platoon Sergeant, Sergeant First Class, Staff Sergeant, Sergeant;
Corporal; Specialist; Private First Class, Private

Air Force
Chief Master Sergeant of the Air Force; Chief Master Sergeant;
Senior Master Sergeant, Master Sergeant, Technical Sergeant, Staff Sergeant, Sergeant;
Airman First Class, Airman, Basic Airman

Marine Corps
Sergeant Major of the Marine Corps, Sergeant Major;
Master Gunnery Sergeant, First Sergeant, Gunnery Sergeant, Staff Sergeant, Sergeant;
Corporal, Lance Corporal; Private First Class, Private

Navy and Coast Guard
Master Chief Petty Officer; Senior Chief Petty Officer; Chief Petty Officer;
Petty Officer First Class, Petty Officer Second Class, Petty Officer Third Class;
Seaman, Apprentice Seaman, Seaman Recruit;
Also E-3 to E1, not shown on table:
Fireman, Fireman Apprentice, Fireman Recruit, all addressed as Fireman;
Airman, Airman Apprentice, Airman Recruit, all addressed as Airman

Address Lines for enlisted personnel use the rank and full name:
PFC Gomer Pyle
Unlike those for officers, they reportedly do not include the branch abbreviation (as an earned Extension)--unless the person is retired!
MSG Ernest Bilko, USA, Ret., or
MSG Ernest Bilko, USA (Ret.)

However, as noted in several other topics: Your final authority is ALWAYS the Individual--not any "forms of address" list, and certainly not this Help file!

Tip

n           Although no periods are shown on this table, periods are used with title abbreviations on many websites prepared by U.S. military personnel!
